INSPECT 2019 Conference Agenda

Friday March 1, 2019 (course option to be selected the day of conference)

10:00 am – 12:00 noon:

Engineered Wood Construction Basics (2 credit hours): Instructor – Holly Woitovich with Trus Joist/Weyerhaeuser. This course covers standard engineering wood installation details, plus allowable hole cuts and notches for Trus Joist I-Joist (TJI Joists) and engineered wood product (EWP) beams. Note: This course is run simultaneously with another 2-hour dual-track option Friday morning.

10:00 am – 12:00 noon:

Residential Pumps: Water, Sump and Sewer (2 credit hours): Instructor – Kenny Hart, owner of K.C. Hart and Company. This session uses an animated slide show and lecture to educate attendees on the three types of pumps inspectors often observe during a residential inspection. The session will review the various types of pumps, their purpose, how they function and both common installation practices and installation mistakes. Components such as pressure tanks, check valves and control devices are reviewed as well. Note: This course is run simultaneously with another 2-hour dual-track option Friday morning.

1:00 pm – 5:00 pm:

Building Science for the Home Inspector (4 credit hours): Instructor – Allison Bailes III, PhD, owner and founder of Energy Vanguard. This course is meant to tune your home inspector goggles with an “eye” on building science. Areas covered include the building enclosure, air leakage, air barriers, insulation types and their (proper) installation, fundamentals of heating and cooling relative to the building enclosure, and the effects of good/bad ventilation. Note: This course is run simultaneously with another 4-hour dual-track option Friday afternoon.

1:00 pm – 5:00 pm:

How a Plumber Inspects the Plumbing (4 credit hours): Instructor – Kenny Hart, owner of K.C. Hart and Company. This session uses an animated slide show and lecture to educate attendees on how a home inspection is performed by a home inspector that has spent more the forty years in the Plumbing and HVAC trade. The course covers typical plumbing system and components inspections with a more critical eye on safety and proper use of materials. Water contamination, scald hazards and explosion concerns are also covered. Note: This course is run simultaneously with another 4-hour dual-track option Frirday afternoon.

Saturday March 2, 2019

8:00 am – 12:00 noon:

2018 Standard of Practice Rules Review Changes, Home Inspection Limitations and Client Expectations (4 credit hours): Instructor – Dave Hahn with Metrolina Inspection Services, LLC. This is the North Carolina Home Inspector Licensure Board mandatory Update Course for 2019. This course will review the significant changes in the rules and the related report and inspection actions that will be required by the licensees to be within the new standards. The course will also investigate conflicts that arise when home inspection limitations exceed the public expectations and understanding of the scope of a home inspection.

1:00 pm – 3:00 pm:

Legal Issues Facing the Home Inspector (2 credit hours): Instructor – Tom Wait, Esq. with Martin & Gifford, PLLC. This course will focus on contract terms, sharing of inspection reports, marketing issues, and handling client complaints.
